About this talk

Gary Rosenberg opens the discussion on measuring social and development impact with three key points. The first is a look at the move from the notion of scholarly publishing to scholarly communication as a process of diffusion, for example, HSRC Press’ social networking initiative on Facebook has garnered a new group of followers and supporters who were quite surprisingly different from their initial target group. The second point is on the notion of value, where Gary suggests that scholarship has been caught-up in a neo-liberal interpretation of value. Lastly he speaks on the point of the politics of scholarship, stating that scholarly literature needs to become global, in order for everyone to have a voice in the public space.
