About this talk

In his address, Francis Nyamnjoh introduces the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) as a model for open access development and implementation. CODESRIA is a multi-disciplinary, pan-African organization based in Senegal, “working towards bringing back the missing African voice” to the global publishing industry.

Francis runs through key initiatives of CODESRIA from their pursuits around protecting academic freedom in Africa; to their mentorship programme where a senior scholar co-publishes or co-edits with a younger scholar in order to enhance the learning process; research training and writing skills workshops; their archival initiative; and grant-making initiative for young academics pursuing their PhD in African universities. He also outlines CODESRIA’s adoption of progressive dissemination strategies, such as print on demand and Google books.
