Valuing Scholarship: Scholarly Publishing and the Knowledge Divide

About this talk

Eve Gray begins with a very brief overview of how the new project has been incubated, emphasizing the strong collaboration that has occurred between donors in the development of this project. She gives an outline of open access and scholarly publishing projects that have paved the way for this project, and points out the key outcomes from each that can be built upon further.

Eve then speaks about the problems within the African context, and offers some key questions for reflection. One of these questions is how different elements in an under-resources environment can be leveraged in order to activate a comprehensive change within the scholarly publishing system – from technology, to capacity building, to finances, to changing the value system of how research is valued. She encourages a paradigm shift for the industry, challenging the existing measures of success and asking how in an African context, we can expand the understanding of what constitutes scholarly communication in a digital world.
